Overview
West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) is a company owned by the Government of West Bengal with the goal to carry on interalia the business of electric power generation and supply in the state of West Bengal, India. The thermal power plants under WBPDCL are in Kolaghat, Bakreswar, Sagardighi, Santaldih,and Bandel. The registered & Corporate Office of The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited has been functioning from its own office bulding at Plot– 3/C, LA-Block, Sector-III, SaltLake City, Kolkata-700 106 on and from 27th October, 2008 (Monday) after shifting the office from New Secretariate Buildings. WBPDCL Formed in July, 1985 with only one generating unit at Kolaghat having turnover of Rs.64 Crore paced up further to Rs.2728 Crores in 2007-08 with 20 units at Kolaghat,Bandel, Bakreswar, Santaldih and Sagardighi. Kolaghat Thermal Power Station involves a total installed capacity of 1260 MW. Installed capacity of Kolaghat Thermal Power Station is 1260 MW., Bakreshwar Thermal Power Station is 1050MW , Sagardighi Thermal Power Project is 1600MW, Bandel Thermal Power Station is 330 MW and Santaldih Thermal Power Station is 500 MW. WBPDCL works in tandem with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC).

MAIN OBJECTIVES
1. The State Government of West Bengal is committed to providing good quality uninterrupted power supply to all its people at affordable rates.
2. As such WBPDCL committed to establishing commercial viability in the power sector so that the necessary investment needs of the sector can be met to cater to increasing demand for accelerating economic growth in the state of West Bengal.
a) Government of West Bengal has set up West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd. was set up in 1985.
b) West Bengal Rural Energy Development Corporation was established in 1998 with the mandate of electrification of the rural areas and supply of electricity at 400 volts and below to consumers in rural sector of the State with active involvement of Panchayat institutions.
c) West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission has been constituted on 31st March, 1999. The Commission is currently considering the tariff petitions filed by WBSEB and other power utilities in the State.
d) With an objective to improve station heat rate and after building of all generating stations under one umbrella as advised by the State Government, the then WBSEB had handed over the management of Bandel and Santaldih Thermal Power Stations to WBPDCL in the year 2001. Since then WBPDCL has been performing well in maintaining Kolaghat TPS, Bakreswar TPP and Sagardighi TPP.
e) The primary objective of the Company has always been to promote the business of electric power generation and evacuation for subsequent supply in the state. In fact, presently the total installed capacity of the state is 9519 MW (Thermal –8376 MW , Hydel– 1081 MW, Renewable – 62 MW ) of which, with a capacity of 4760 MW, this premier state owned Power Utility generates bulk of the State’s power supply.

FUTURE PLANS
- Installation of 660 MW Super Critical Power Unit of SgTPP Unit 5.
- Opening of captive coal mines.
- Construction of Ash Water Recirculation Water Lagoon at SgTPP.
- Installation of 10 MW Ground Mounted Solar PV Plant at SgTPP.
- Installation of 5 MW each Floating Solar PV Plant at SgTPP and STPS.
- Installation of Substation Automation System at STPS as a part of PSDF Grant.
